From Yogyakarta to the Lava Slopes

Mount Merapi lies north of Yogyakarta, roughly an hour's drive. Add Borobudur and Prambanan if you want a full day. Stops 2 to 6 are on the jeep route; 7 and 8 are optional combo stops.

Is Mount Merapi safe to visit?
Merapi is an active volcano at Alert Level III (Siaga) since November 2020, checked 12 October 2026. The summit is closed, and jeep tours stay on the lower slopes. A trip can be changed or postponed if activity or weather requires it.
Can I hike to the summit of Mount Merapi?
No. The summit is officially closed and a restricted zone of about 3 km applies. A jeep tour is the usual way to see the volcano and the 2010 eruption sites.
How much does a Merapi jeep tour cost?
Jeep tours are priced per jeep, not per person, and one jeep takes up to 4 guests. Our reference prices run from IDR 500,000 to 750,000 per jeep depending on the route, to be confirmed by the operator. Check what is included before comparing offers.
How far is Mount Merapi from Yogyakarta?
Roughly an hour's drive north of the city. With hotel pick-up, a jeep tour usually takes about half a day door to door.
Can I combine Merapi with Borobudur or Prambanan?
Yes. Popular options are a half day of Borobudur sunrise plus a jeep tour, or a 12-hour private day with Borobudur, Merapi and Prambanan. Tickets and exact timings are to be confirmed.
Will I be able to see the volcano?
Mornings are usually clearer, and cloud can hide the summit at any time of year. If the view is blocked you still see the lava tracks and eruption sites.
